Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Chardonnay 2018 is made in a Margaret River winery owned by Bruce Dukes, who has over 25 years experience both overseas and as a contract winemaker in the Valley. It seemed only natural that he would make his own wines, and they have gone from strength to strength over the past 5 years.
We offered the previous vintage of this wine last year, which was in James Halliday’s Top 100. We think this vintage will do so again. It is just sensational and is drinking better than a lot of Chardonnay priced closer to $50.
The pristine quality fruit and respectful winemaking shine at every moment you engage with this wine, from the moment you pour it into a glass, to when you take your first sip. This is a wine which packs plenty of flavour, yet it is so elegant and refined at the same time. This is the new, new look at Aussie Chardonnay at an unbelievable price. First there was the Oak and Butter styles from the 80’s and 90’s. Then the unwooded and neutral wines of the “Naughties” and now we have come to the Modern Australian Chardonnay, where flavour and elegance are balanced and supported by high quality oak. Chardonnay really is the new black, but I thought you needed to spend over $25 to get the goods, but I guess I was wrong.
Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Chardonnay 2018, fermentation and maturation took place in seasoned French oak (only 5 % new) which adds complexity and generosity of texture without compromising the purity of aromatics or flavour. Tropical flavours are very prominent with melons and grapefruits to the fore. The wine is just so fresh and vibrant with a cracking acidity. There is a touch of butterscotch, but just enough to entice, rather than dominate.
Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture and overall balance in all his wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the Northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated.
