Did you know it was National Record Store Day?
Not sure who comes up with these days, but I hope it gives someone a job.
Record Stores, we are showing our age now. These predate the video stores, but just like Video Easy, they have all but disappeared.
I hear Vinyl records are making a comeback, but there are only so many hipsters out there.
You could tell a lot about a person from where they used to stand in a record shop.
Were they into Pop and Madonna (I can’t believe she is still in the charts. I didn’t like her then and I like her even less now – Please go away and age gracefully). Were they into Alternative rock or House music? A fun way to spend a few hours!
Every little suburb in Sydney used to have these stores, but then the big stores like HMV and Virgin took over, then came the internet and Napster, then came Steve Jobs and I tunes
I kind of miss those stores, but I now find the same sort of pleasure looking through bottle shops and wine labels.
Or being an online retailer, looking through the different sites and winery sites. Wine cellars give me the same level of excitement too, fondling all those bottles, but that is another post.
We are working with a new Sommelier for our next selection. Adrian Filuta of Felix in Sydney, part of the Merivale group. Felix is a great French inspired bistro in the heart of the city and if you haven’t been, make a reservation now. The food, wine and service are sensational
But then everything that Justin Hemmes touches seems to turn into gold.
Justin is the 40 something boss of this hospitality group and I cannot think of a person who is enjoying life more than him
He seems to buy pubs like you and I buy shirts, but every pub or restaurant he touches turns into magic. Walk around his Ivy and Establishment venues in Sydney and it’s as good as anything I have seen in New York or Melbourne. I swear, this guy should have been knighted, not Prince Phillip
But enough of him, back to some wines.
I am in love with Spain at the moment, and one of the wines presented to the Sommeliers was a charity project associated with a pretty cool winemaker.
I love these type of stories; it makes me want to get off my backside and do something good.
The project and the wine share the same name – the 2011 Fundacion Maga [Rioja]. A fantastic wine made by Bodegas Muriel. Form the proceeds so far they have built 2 schools in Cambodia and 1 in Sierre Leone
The wine is bloody good and we are looking to see if we can get it into one of our packs
Watch this space and enjoy your records/cd’s/itunes with your own favourite wines, hopefully one we have supplied
