Woodstock is one of the leading wineries in McLaren Vale, South Australia, owned and operated by the Collett family since 1973.
The wines are now made by both Scott Collett and Ben Glaetzer. Scott in the vineyards and Ben in the cellars, then both jointly in the tasting room.
Ben is one of our favourite winemakers at the moment and he is a real gun and hails from winemaking royalty. (His uncle was the original winemaker at Wolf Blass in the 1970’s and 80’s – Colin Glaetzer.
The “Pilot’s View” is a tribute to Scott’s late father Doug, who was a real character and McLaren Vale legend, plus a fighter pilot during WWII.
Woodstock make this Pilot’s View Shiraz to be consumed with food, sourced from vines planted to sandy soils on the estate. Warm sunny days and cool nights ensure the blackberry and plum flavours fully ripen whilst retaining natural acidity. It’s a lot of wine, but deliberately no blockbuster. The wine has a juiciness to it and the oak is there, but throttled back and the whole thing is tempered with fine savoury tannins. The glossy oak mantle works extremely well, adding a delicious layer to a tasty, fresh and lively red.
