We supply a number of imported wines, where the use of a cork closure is still wide spread. To most Australians cork is very old fashioned. However in Europe and the US, cork is the only closure in town. They have not embraced the Screw Cap like we have.
You may be interested to know, it is really only in Australia and NZ that the Screw Cap is widespread. This was largely due to the “Crap” quality of corks sent to our wineries in the late 90’s and early 2000. The incidence of TCA cork taint was just too high. So the wineries switched to Screw Caps. In took a number of years for Australian drinkers to embrace the “Screw rather than the Pull”, but now, we all want to Screw!
However if we want to enjoy the great wines from Europe, you will need to embrace the Pull and the Cork, and with it TCA cork taint – See below
Thankfully only a very small number of bottles will be affected by TCA, but if you smell the tell tale “Musty Wet Cardboard” aromas, simply take a photo of the opened bottle, send it to us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we will refund you the full purchase price of the bottle.
Thankfully the cork producers in Portugal have really cleaned up their practices, so this should not be a major concern, but if you drink enough bottles, you are bound to find a “Corked” bottle of wine.
What is a “Corked Wine”?
Cork taint is a broad term referring to a wine fault characterised by a set of undesirable smells or tastes found in a bottle of wine and the cork is normally held responsible. A wine found to be tainted on opening is said to be “corked” or “corky”. Cork taint can affect wines irrespective of price and quality level. Despite being completely harmless, it significantly affects the wines native aromas and flavours. (It smells bloody awful)
The chief cause of cork taint is the presence of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), which in many cases will have been transferred from a fungus on the original cork tree. Corked wine containing TCA has a characteristic odour, variously described as resembling wet musty cardboard.
The most difficult part of this job is that there are just too many wines, and let’s be frank, not all of them are good. Sure you can drink them, but do you want to spend you hard earned money on OK wine. We don’t !
This was the premise behind the creation of Bullion Cellars and where our Sommeliers come into the equation. We don’t have the time to taste all these wines, but by working with the 4 best sommeliers in Australia, we can get them to weed out all the crap and only offer us the best.
A lot of guess work can be taken out of wine selection when you know the history of the winery and the region. This involves the type of winemaking practices used, the regions they source from and the quality of fruit used. Our Sommeliers know this stuff! They taste hundreds of wine every week and refine these to a chosen few. Our Chosen few!
Easy right. Well it still takes a bit of time, but there are worse things you could be doing.
Every wine from Bullion Cellars has been hand selected by one of our Sommeliers and we stand by our 100% money back guarantee
We might send you a wine you do not like, but it will not be a bad or dud wine. It will be a great example of the style and the region, it just won’t be a style you like. Don’t worry, we will return your money, but if you were to have a dinner party with 6 of your friends and open that bottle, 4 -5 of them will think it is sensational.
Easy – You will only pay $8.95 freight per case. If you are buying a 6 pack under our Bullion Drop, you should consider adding another six pack. (12 bottles is the same freight rate as 6 and will save you money)
